It took me ages to find out which file defines the resume device for the suspend function in Ubuntu. Finally I find out it is at the location below:

/etc/initramfs-tools/conf.d/resume

And what does this do, sounds interesting?

It defines the hard disk partition that is written to when the computer suspends or hibernates - all the stuff in your memory is dumped to here as an ‘image’ before the computer powers down and it can then be reloaded into memory when you next power up. On Linux you normally write to your ’swap’ partition as there is no important data stored there, I repartitioned my hard drive and so the swap partition had changed and I needed to tell the computer where the new partition was for hibernate!

Ahhh complicated :-) Anyway its working now.

Are you running Ibex now? I’m running XP on the laptop as I need iTunes 8 for my iPod, unless there is an alternative on Linux.. I should look.

  4. Jono Says:

Nah… I’m sticking with Hardy because upgrading to Ibex breaks support for the Nvidia 3D driver. I think I will wait for a couple of months, hopefully by then they will have smoothed out all the creases. My Laptop is 100% linux and I love it that way, however I too need access to windows programs at times - for this I run Virtualbox and a virtual copy of Windows XP which is perfect. This should allow you to run iTunes fine and you should be able to enable USB pass-through, just google around. If you want a native alternative to Linux, Rhythmbox is ok, otherwise gtkpod is another handy tool you could try out.

Unfortunately I’ve got a 2nd generation touch which cannot be used on Linux until they crack the new hash on Firmware 2.1 - apparently Apple have protected this quite well.

What windows apps do you need to run? In the past I found both Crossover Office & plain old Wine to be acceptable.

  6. Jono Says:

I’m sure its only a matter of time before they crack it!

I in fact only really use a couple of programs - Funshion (风行)which is a great Chinese movie application and 阿里旺旺 a messenger application that is used to contact sellers on Chinese eBay. Neither of these work with Wine… Funshion is amazing, you can basically watch any decent film in pretty high resolution in realtime on your computer! It makes use of the bittorrent protocol but somehow you don’t have to wait until the download is finished to watch! You should give it a shot as long as you are willing to tolerate the Chinese subtitles! As for office, I use openoffice and google gocs so don’t require a windows installation. Still, its always handy to have a copy of XP at hand just in case I need to run an exe file or something.

  7. Simon Says:

Checking out Funshion now. Loving the Facebook inspired webpage it has. I’ll take a look at what it installs as it might need some funky dlls to work in Wine.

  8. Jono Says:

If you can get it working under Linux then I can give up XP forever!

  9. Joe Says:

Hello. I’m also interested in using funshion in Wine. Did you make any progress? Thank you!

  10. Jono Says:

    Hi Joe

I’m afraid that I have had no progress as of yet and am still using virtualbox to run Funshion.
