Microsoft have just brought out a new web-based (webmail) email system called “WIndows Live Mail”. The new system which is to replace Hotmail threatens to be a rival with the incredibly popular Google Mail (Gmail).
Problem
With many people leaving Hotmail due to its slow and unattractive interface, Microsoft have had to have a rethink and are on the verge of launching a new webmail system called “Windows Live Mail” which is set to replace the old Hotmail system. They are offering existing Hotmail users the chance to try out the Beta version of the new system.
Copy-Cats?
Similar to Google’s webmail, “Live Mail” allows you to compose, read and manage your emails all through one dynamic web window. No more refreshing, no new pages loading, Microsoft compares Live Mail to a web version of Outlook. Heres a snapshot of what it looks like:
Features of the new system include:
- Previews of your messages you can read without leaving your inbox.
- Drag-and-drop organisation
- One-click control over junk and scam e-mails
- Right-click power – reply, delete, and forward
- 2 GB of storage (2 GB = 2,000,000,000 bytes)
Is it enough?
In fact, if you read the list above, what Microsoft is proposing is not exactly ground-breaking. Google have had this sort of thing running for years already and are already providing much more space than 2GB. Furthermore, Google is not tied to any particular browser, unlike WIndows Live Mail which is likely to only work in Internet Explorer, yet another deterrent to many internet users who tend to be opting for Firefox. Finally, most people are already quite happy with their Gmail accounts and have no good reason (except curiosity) to return to the realms of Hotmail. Microsoft’s attempt to recover some of their former market share is likely to be a flop unless they pull a surprise trump card out of the bag.
Heres what they have to say:
Put simply, it’s fast and simple e-mail that makes it easy to read, send and organise your messages. The “betaâ€? part means it’s a work in progress, so we need your input to make sure it’s built right. just wanted to clarify a few points. Live mail works perfectly on firefox, it even works on my PSP! I actually prefer the microsoft interface slightly over gmails. I don’t think it has enough to make me switch! A more indepth review coming soon when I’m not trying to type on a PSP!
